(Claire orders an assortment of dishes .Ariel brings the first one as soon as it’s ready)
Ariel:Here you are,lady.
Claire:Excuse me,Ariel. I ordered some soup . Could I have that first?
Ariel:Oh,soup is normally the last course in this restaurant.
Claire:Isn’t that a little weird,Ariel?
Ariel:Not for Chinese. But if you like,I’ll prepare your soup right away.
Claire:no,it’s ok. As they say 〝When in Rome,do as the Romans do.〞
Claire:Ariel,could you bring some ketchup?
Ariel:Sorry,I don’t think we have any.
Claire:I always put ketchup on my food. It makes everything taste better.
Ariel:Isn’t that a little weird,Claire?Just kidding! You’ll find the food is already quite well seasoned.
Claire:Just one other thing ,Ariel. Could I have some dinner plates, please?Maybe you forgot to put them on the table. These little plates are too small.
Ariel:Actually,Chinese usually don’t eat from large plates.
Claire:But the meal won’t fit on this.
Ariel:May I suggest you just take a few morsels at a time and put them on the little plate or on top of your rice? That’s the way Chinese do it.
Ariel:Are you enjoying your meal?
Claire:Apart from trying to get the hang of these chopsticks, yes. Ariel, you are a great cook. This food is delicious!
Ariel:well,is there anything else we could do to make our food more attractive to Americans?
Claire:Yeah. You make good stuff here. But I would suggest not serving soup for dessert.
Ariel:Oh,we don’t serve soup for dessert,Claire,we serve fresh fruit after the soup.
Claire:what?no cheesecake or Black Forest cake or mocha mud pie?
Ariel:No. Do you think we should offer those?
Claire:Well, you can make a good profit on fancy desserts. Americans have a terrible sweet tooth ,you know!
Ariel:We’ll look into it . Thanks!
